Germany Edge Poland To Win SuperCup

Heiko Schaffartzik and Germany won the SuperCup for the second time after 2004

Germany beat Poland 78-74 to win the Beko SuperCup in Bamberg.

Jan Hendrik Jagla had 16 points for the Germans, who took command in the first quarter when they poured in 29 points.

The Poles are a solid team, though, and they bounced back after in the second frame to lead 46-45.

After being held to 16 second-quarter points, the Germans tightened up on defense in the third period and limited Poland to just 12.

Poland very nearly won the game with Jakub Wojciechowski scoring 19 points and Marcin Gortat 14.

The trio of Tibor Pleiß, Heiko Schaffartzik and Per Günther poured in 12 points each to give Germany a balanced offense.

They had a 71-70 lead with less than three minutes remaining, but the Germans struck with a 6-0 run and won a thriller.

Finland lost their opening game at the SuperCup to Germany but beat Turkey 98-82 to clinch third place.

Mikko Koivisto poured in 18 points, Shawn Huff 17 and Gerald Lee 13 for the Finns, while youngster Ilkan Karaman had 12 points and 12 rebounds in defeat for the Turks.

All four teams are preparing for the EuroBasket Qualification Round, which gets underway this week.
