Raised in the town of Comblain-au-Pont, his professional debut came with Verviers-Pepinster, who he led to their first-ever Belgian championship final in 2003, after coming through the club's junior system. He was intimately involved in efforts to save Pepinster from extinction in 2012. Axel won Belgium's Sportsman of the Year (Mérite Sportif) in 2005, having helped Real Madrid to the Spanish title before being chosen with the 52nd overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 2005 NBA Draft, the first Belgian ever to be selected. He was part of the Real team which was ACB champion in 2007, as well as lifting the ULEB Cup after the final in Charleroi. In 2009, his NBA Draft rights were traded to the Houston Rockets. He originally joined Bilbao on loan in 2010 before making the move permanent, playing a major role in Bilbao's run to the last eight of the Euroleague - their best-ever result. Hervelle helped Belgium into a EuroBasket for the first time in 17 years in 2010, having represented his country at Under-16, U18 and U20 levels. However he was injured on the eve of EuroBasket 2011 and also missed the 2012 qualifying campaign due to a knee problem.
