Ukraine Seal Coveted Spot In Slovenia

The party is underway in Lviv after Ukraine finally shrugged off a pesky Austria with a late surge to take a landmark 68-57 win and book their place at EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia.

It was however far from a straightforward success for Ukraine since Austria made a real nuisance of themselves for three quarters.

The home side continually struggled to make the kind of decisive break they craved so they could ride over the finishing line in style.

Indeed at the start of the fourth quarter, the result still hung in the balance with Ukraine holding only a slender point advantage after a disappointing third period which Austria won 18-13 to keep themselves in contention for a surprise win.

It was young Aleksandr Lypovyy who came off the bench to spark the run which not only sealed the victory, but also took Ukraine to the brink of successive EuroBasket Final Round appearances.

The shooter dropped a three-ball which provided the stimulus for the hosts to make their move as they posted a game-winning 15-4 run with a perimeter score by Stiven Bertt taking his team to their first double-digit lead of the night.

That proved to be more than enough to seal the deal and especially with the defence manfully locking down their opponent to great effect.

Not for the first time, Sergii Gladyr led the way with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists whilst Maxym Korniyenko finished with a double-double for his team.
