EUROBASKET QUALIFIERS

Marcin Gortat (Poland)
Marcin Gortat came down hard on Switzerland, leading Poland to an impressive victory with his 31 points and 13 rebounds

There's no stopping Marcin Gortat this summer as he conjured up another monstrous effort in Qualification Round Group E to lift Poland past Switzerland, 111-67, and keep his team on track for a top-two finish.

Nicknamed 'the Polish hammer', the center certainly lived up to his moniker as he pounded away under the hoop to corral a fine double-double of 31 points and 13 rebounds.

Switzerland had little way of containing him and for the most part, he was unstoppable, making 14 of his 17 attempts to continually wreak havoc in the paint.

The home side thrilled the fans in Zielona Gora with a high-tempo fluent start, hitting an instant offensive rhythm which was the reason for a 32-16 first quarter with the Swiss unable to stem the tide.

There was to be no slowdown during the second period either, Switzerland giving up a mammoth 56 points by the break and trailing by some 24 points.

Unsurprisingly, there was a reaction on their return to the court for the third quarter when they managed to score 12 of the first 14 points in the half but normal service was swiftly resumed as Poland subsequently regained full control to coast to a comfortable victory.

Michal Ignerski also shone brightly for the winning team with 17 points and 11 rebounds whilst Dusan Mladjan and Oliver Vogt mustered a combined 37 points for the Swiss.
