Poland left hosts Belgium and over 4,000 fans in Antwerp stunned after producing a spectacular fourth quarter to seal a fine 87-73 EuroBasket Qualification Round Group E success. Trailing 65-62 heading into the last ten minutes, Poland suddenly exploded in a major way to outscore Belgium 25-8 and romp to victory, led by Marcin Gortat. There had been little sign to suggest either team would make such a decisive run in what had been an intense struggle fo the first thirty minutes but once Poland made their move, Belgium couldn't react. Michal Ignerski and Przemyslaw Zamojski ignited the late burst with back to back three-pointers at the start of the fourth period and it's a victory which Poland will gain huge satisfaction from since it now gives them great impetus to push on and clinch an automatic qualification spot. Belgium meanwhile will be wondering where it all went wrong having held a six point lead late in the third period after a basket by Christophe Beghin. Gortat was in superb form for Poland, showing his class with a phenomenal performance of 29 points and 10 rebounds. |
